What Is a Birthstone?
Birthstones are gemstones associated with each month of the year. The tradition dates back to ancient times — the biblical Book of Exodus describes twelve gemstones on the breastplate of Aaron, representing the twelve tribes of Israel. Over centuries, these became associated with the twelve months and, later, the twelve signs of the zodiac.
The modern standardised birthstone list was established by the National Association of Jewelers (now Jewelers of America) in 1912. Several months have been updated since — most recently August in 2016, when Spinel was added.
